  • If you are unsure about what stepdown you will need please check these questions:

  • What is the total watts used by the appliances that is to be connected to the Transformer?Total watts are less than or equal to the VA rating of the below transformer needed

  • Does your appliance have a motor*?
  • If a motor is included then this increases power usage from the stepdown - so a 25% extra buffer must be added to the watt requirement

  • Does your appliance have a mechanical timing device? If so, how critical is this timing device? If a timing device is included the speed of the device may change due to the frequency change, 60Hz to 50Hz.
  • If you know Amps of your device then watts required= Amps x 110v (eg 5Amps x 115 = 575 watts)

  • Do you wish to use multiple appliances from one stepdown?
  • check total watts of all devices, this must be less than the VA rating of the stepdown & you will need a USA Power board to run multiple devices. (see our ebay store)

Will your stepdowns run 24 hours Continuously? Why is this an important  difference between yours and others?

Tortech stepdown transformers are  rated at a continuous rating.This means the transformers are  designed to run at full rating as designated for a 24 hour continuously. Unlike others we do not deceive customers by  offering a short time rated rating, where  the transformer can not operate for periods longer then an hour  at maximum rating. 

For Example: A 2000w stepdown that runs for 1 hour at 2000w and then drops to 1400w rating continuous after.  This is a very important difference between Tortech units and we believe it is  false advertising to offer otherwise.  All Tortech stepdowns are guaranteed to  run at maximum rate continuously.


Qn: What makes your stepdowns much safer then others?

We use 2 methods of safety protection with our transformers:

1) Our Transformers use a fuse for short circuit protection and overload current conditions. This is to handle a very large increase in overload current.

2) Inbuilt thermal over load protection is the second method of protection with every enclosed transformer. This prevents the transformer from over heating.The transformer has incorporated into the primary circuit, a thermal overload switch which monitors the internal temperature of the toroidal transformer. 

Qn: Why do your transformers have much more energy efficient idle power (power when not in use) then others?

 The reason the Tortech range(>100va ratings) has such low idle current and idle watts loss is due to the core construction of the toroidal transformer magnetic core. The toroidal transformer uses better quality core steel (grain orientated silicon steel) that has lower losses than conventional EI transformers .

Question: Hi there, I noticed the 500 Watt Isolated Step Down transformer working under 230-240v AC input. Does it work with 220V input AC? Cheers, Zen 06 Jun, 2014
Answer: This transformer drops the voltage from 240v down to 110v (American) or 100v (Japanese) or 220v (European). If used with a 220v input, The output will be lower corresponding to the ratio ( About 20v lower). This should be acceptable with most equipment (as they have tolerance limits). The no-load voltage for this transformer at 220v would be around 104v. Alternatively, we can build you a custom transformer.
Question: Is this product 60 Hz or 50 Hz 10 Jul, 2014
Answer: Stepdown Transformers convert the voltage but not frequency. No Transformer can change the Frequency (Hertz or Cycles of the power) Australia = 50Hz Frequency America = 60Hz Frequency Frequency difference may effect some appliances but fortunately is a very small percentage of equipment.     Im just so happy with this transformer.
    Ive had a nightmare situation with this product i brought in from the USA
    The previous transformer simply couldnt handle it and the power dropped out after 20 minutes of use!
    However this transformer works well, ive had no issues with my food processor and im so happy
    thanks to the folks at Tortech! (Posted on 6/06/14)

Please Check these important 5 questions before purchasing your step down transformer:

1. What is the total watts used by appliances to be connected to the Transformer?

Select from our Step downs transformers based on how many watts your device uses. 

Choose the transformer rated above your devices watts usage.

E.g: Playstation 3 uses 380 Watts so you need the 500 watt rated stepdown transformer.

2. Does your appliance have a motor ?

If a motor is included then you should select a stepdown rating approx 25% higher than your motor as a buffer.  

Motors have a higher power use on the stepdowns and startup currents which need to be allowed for.

Most motors have a rating plate on them with their Power and Amperage rating.

3. Does your appliance have a mechanical timing device? 

If so, how critical is this timing device?The Transformer cannot change the Frequency. It is 50Hz

If a timing device is included the speed of the device may change due to the frequency change, 60Hz to 50Hz (eg old clocks, motors / fans/microwaves ) Most modern electronic devices should not be affected. Read more about frequency

4. Do you know the Amps of your device? - is so you can calculate the watts required:

Calculated as Watts = Amps x 110Volts  (eg 5 A x 110 V = 550 watts)


5. Do you wish to use multiple appliances from one stepdown?

Check total watts of all devices this must be less than the VA (Watt) rating of the stepdown & get a US Powerboard.

Note: Always look at the INPUT POWER rating - often underneath the bottom of your product on a spec label.

USA Equipment is identified as 110v, 115v , 120v  (requires a USA stepdown)    

Japan 100V (requires a Japan stepdown ) or 110V  

European 220v (requires a Euro stepdown)

Wattage - you need to check the Input Power Rating label on their Product  for the Watts (W) or the Amps (A) figures.If you see the HP (horse power) for a motor multiply it be 746 for watts then add 25% for motor.
